Abstract Preview

Agricultural exports have declined as a share of Nigerian total exports due to oil dominance. This study analyzed agricultural export performance and determinants from 2000-2022. Secondary data on export volumes, values, and related factors were analyzed. Results showed that agricultural exports grew at 3.2% annually but declined from 7% to 2.5% of total exports. Cocoa, sesame, cashew, and rubber were leading export commodities. Regression analysis identified exchange rate, global commodity prices, domestic production, and infrastructure as significant determinants of export performance. The real exchange rate was found to be overvalued, hurting export competitiveness. Recommendations include exchange rate management supportive of exports, investment in export infrastructure, and product quality improvement.
