Abstract Preview

Food price volatility threatens food security, particularly for urban households who are net food buyers. This study analyzed food price volatility and its impact on household food security in Lagos State. Monthly price data for major food items over ten years were analyzed for volatility patterns, and 300 urban households were surveyed on food consumption and coping strategies. Results showed significant volatility in prices of rice (CV=28%), yam (CV=35%), and vegetables (CV=42%). Higher price volatility was associated with lower dietary diversity scores and increased food insecurity prevalence. Low-income households were disproportionately affected. Coping strategies included reducing meal frequency (45%), switching to cheaper foods (68%), and reducing portion sizes (52%). Policy recommendations include price stabilization mechanisms and social protection programs.
