Abstract Preview

Catfish production has grown rapidly in Nigeria due to high demand. This study analyzed profitability and resource use efficiency in catfish production in Delta State. Data were collected from 120 catfish farmers using structured questionnaires. Gross margin analysis and production function estimation were conducted. Results showed average production of 2,500 kg per cycle with total cost of N1.8 million and revenue of N2.9 million, giving a gross margin of N1.1 million. The enterprise was profitable with a return on investment of 61%. However, resource use analysis showed that feed (MVP/MFC=0.75), labor (MVP/MFC=1.42), and pond size (MVP/MFC=1.28) were not optimally allocated. Feed was overutilized while labor and pond capacity were underutilized. Recommendations include optimal feed management and efficient labor use.
