Abstract Preview

Millet is a staple crop in northern Nigeria increasingly affected by climate variability. This study estimated the economic impact of climate change on millet production in Zamfara State. Thirty years of climate and production data were analyzed alongside survey data from 200 millet farmers. The Ricardian approach was used to estimate climate impacts on net revenue. Results showed that temperature increase of 1 degree Celsius reduced millet net revenue by 18%, while a 10% decrease in rainfall reduced revenue by 12%. Farmers perceived increased drought frequency, delayed rainfall onset, and more intense heat. Projected climate scenarios indicate potential revenue losses of 25-40% by 2050. Adaptation measures including drought-tolerant varieties and irrigation reduced vulnerability by 35%. The study recommends climate-smart agriculture investments.
