Abstract Preview

The Anchor Borrowers Programme (ABP) was launched to boost agricultural productivity through subsidized credit. This study assessed its impact on rice farmers in Ebonyi State. Using propensity score matching, 120 ABP beneficiaries were compared with 120 non-beneficiaries. Results showed that ABP participants achieved significantly higher yields (4.5 tons/ha versus 2.9 tons/ha) and income (52% higher). Beneficiaries had better access to improved seeds, fertilizers, and agrochemicals. However, challenges included delayed input delivery (45%), inadequate loan amounts (38%), and repayment difficulties (32%). The study concludes that ABP positively impacts productivity but recommends timely input delivery and realistic loan sizing.

Research Objectives

  • 1To compare rice yields between ABP beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries
  • 2To assess the effect of ABP on farmer income
  • 3To identify inputs and services received through ABP
  • 4To examine challenges in ABP implementation

Suggested Methodology

Quasi-experimental design using propensity score matching of 240 rice farmers in Ebonyi State
