Abstract Preview

Post-harvest losses significantly reduce farm income and food availability in Nigeria. This study assessed post-harvest losses in tomato production in Kano State, a major tomato-producing area. Data were collected from 200 farmers, 50 traders, and 30 processors using structured questionnaires. Results revealed average post-harvest losses of 42% from farm to consumer, valued at approximately N2.3 billion annually in the study area. Major causes included inadequate storage facilities (34%), poor transportation (28%), and pest infestation (18%). Farmers bore 45% of total losses while traders and retailers bore 35% and 20% respectively. The study recommends investment in cold chain infrastructure and improved packaging.

Research Objectives

  • 1To quantify post-harvest losses at different stages of the tomato value chain
  • 2To identify causes of post-harvest losses in tomato production
  • 3To estimate economic value of post-harvest losses
  • 4To recommend strategies for reducing post-harvest losses
