Abstract Preview
Climate-smart agriculture offers approaches for sustainable food production under changing climate conditions. This study examined adoption of climate-smart practices among sorghum farmers in Jigawa State. A sample of 200 sorghum farmers was surveyed across four Local Government Areas. Climate-smart practices assessed included drought-tolerant varieties, conservation agriculture, water harvesting, and agroforestry. Results showed adoption rates of 42% for drought-tolerant varieties, 28% for conservation tillage, 35% for water harvesting, and 18% for agroforestry. Adopters reported 25% higher yields during drought years compared to non-adopters. Factors influencing adoption included access to information, extension contact, and experience with crop failure. Limited awareness and high initial costs were major constraints.
Research Objectives
- 1To identify climate-smart practices adopted by sorghum farmers
- 2To assess factors influencing adoption of climate-smart practices
- 3To evaluate the effect of climate-smart practices on yield stability
- 4To identify constraints to adoption
