Abstract Preview
Contract farming can provide smallholders with market access and production support. This study analyzed contract farming in oil palm production in Cross River State. Data were collected from 100 contract farmers, 100 independent farmers, and 5 contracting companies. Results showed that contract farmers received inputs on credit, technical assistance, and guaranteed markets. Contract farmers achieved higher yields (18 tons FFB/ha versus 12 tons/ha) but lower profit margins per ton due to price deductions. Overall income was 35% higher for contract farmers due to higher productivity and reduced marketing costs. Concerns included unfavorable terms, delayed payments, and quality disputes. The study recommends stronger farmer organizations to negotiate better terms.
