Abstract Preview
Yam is an important food and cash crop in Nigeria but faces production and marketing challenges. This study conducted an economic analysis of yam production in Taraba State. Data were collected from 180 yam farmers using structured questionnaires. Gross margin and net farm income analyses were conducted. Results showed average yield of 12.5 tons per hectare with total production cost of N485,000/ha and gross revenue of N875,000/ha, giving a gross margin of N390,000/ha. Major cost components included seed yam (45%), labor (32%), and fertilizer (12%). The benefit-cost ratio of 1.8 indicates profitable production. However, high seed yam cost and price volatility were identified as major challenges. Recommendations include promotion of minisett technology and improved marketing systems.
