Abstract Preview

Fertilizer subsidies have been a major agricultural policy intervention in Nigeria. This study examined the effect of fertilizer subsidy on usage and crop production in Kogi State. Data were collected from 200 farmers comprising beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries of the e-wallet fertilizer subsidy program. Results showed that subsidy beneficiaries used 65% more fertilizer than non-beneficiaries and achieved 32% higher maize yields. However, subsidized fertilizer reached only 38% of targeted farmers, with diversion and late delivery being common problems. Wealthier farmers with larger farms were more likely to benefit. The study recommends improved targeting mechanisms and timely delivery to ensure subsidies reach smallholder farmers effectively.

Research Objectives

  • 1To assess access to subsidized fertilizer among farmers
  • 2To compare fertilizer use between subsidy beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries
  • 3To analyze the effect of subsidy on crop production
  • 4To identify challenges in fertilizer subsidy implementation

Suggested Methodology

Comparative survey of 200 farmers including subsidy beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries in Kogi State
