Abstract Preview
Vegetable production in urban and peri-urban areas faces significant pest pressure, often leading to excessive pesticide use. This study evaluated integrated pest management (IPM) practices among vegetable farmers in Lagos State. A sample of 180 vegetable farmers was surveyed across three agricultural zones. Results showed that 38% of farmers practiced some form of IPM, with biological control (28%), cultural practices (45%), and selective pesticide use (34%) being common. IPM adopters had 40% lower pesticide costs and comparable yields to conventional farmers. Factors promoting IPM adoption included training, education, and environmental awareness. Barriers included limited knowledge, unavailability of biological control agents, and habit. The study recommends farmer training and IPM input supply.
Research Objectives
- 1To assess the level of IPM adoption among vegetable farmers
- 2To identify IPM practices used by farmers
- 3To compare costs and yields between IPM and conventional practices
- 4To identify factors influencing IPM adoption
