Abstract Preview
The growing concern over environmental degradation and health risks associated with chemical-intensive agriculture has renewed interest in organic farming. This study assessed organic farming practices among smallholder farmers in Benue State, Nigeria. Using a sample of 250 farmers selected through multi-stage sampling technique, data were collected on farming practices, input usage, crop yields, and profitability. Results revealed that 34% of farmers practiced some form of organic farming, with composting and crop rotation being the most common practices. Organic farms showed 15% lower yields compared to conventional farms but had 23% lower production costs, resulting in comparable profit margins. The study recommends government support for organic certification and market development.
