Abstract Preview

Soil degradation threatens agricultural sustainability in many parts of Nigeria. This study assessed soil conservation practices among farmers in Plateau State. Data were collected from 220 farmers using structured questionnaires. Results showed that 67% of farmers practiced some form of soil conservation. Common practices included contour farming (45%), mulching (52%), cover cropping (38%), and terracing (28%). Adopters reported higher soil fertility and more stable yields over time. Factors significantly influencing adoption included farm slope, land ownership, extension contact, and awareness of soil degradation. Constraints included labor requirements, lack of knowledge, and insufficient land for cover cropping. The study recommends strengthening extension education on soil conservation.

Research Objectives

  • 1To identify soil conservation practices adopted by farmers
