Abstract Preview
Urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA) contributes to urban food security but faces unique challenges. This study assessed UPA in Abuja FCT. Data were collected from 180 urban and peri-urban farmers using structured questionnaires. Results showed that vegetable production (72%), poultry (45%), and fish farming (28%) were predominant activities. UPA provided primary income for 35% of practitioners and supplementary income for 65%. On average, UPA contributed 42% of household food consumption for practitioners. Challenges included insecure land tenure (78%), water scarcity (65%), and lack of policy support (58%). Women comprised 62% of urban farmers. The study recommends integrating UPA into urban planning and providing targeted support for urban farmers.
